Literary Map

Many of the poets that we have labelled as Scottish Women Poets on this website did not spend their entire lives in Scotland. Some were born in England or outside of the UK, others traveled extensively or moved abroad for work or schooling. Still others moved away from Scotland as a child, but still identify culturally and emotionally as being Scottish. There has been considerable debate about what defines someone as Scottish: is someone a Scottish poet if they only lived in Scotland until age six, or if they moved to Scotland as an adult? This map provides a visual representation of the poets discussed on this website. As one can see, these poets lived all over the world, yet we still define them as Scottish. Each poet is represented by a different colour pin, and this map includes only locations where these poets lived, worked, studied or traveled for considerable periods of time.
