Discoveries from the Nineteenth Century

The Goals of this Project:  As part of our mission for Scottish Women Poets, we strive to make the work of lesser-known poets available for study and enjoyment.  Since Scottish women poets did not receive much attention as a group or as individuals until the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we would like to circulate poetry by Scottish women who lived and wrote primarily in the nineteenth century.  Many of these poems come from the periodical newspapers and magazines that were highly popular in the Victorian era, but other poems may come from the poet’s stand-alone poetry volumes.  We have conveniently labelled each poem with the title, author, date of publication, and source.  These poems are all our own transcriptions from the originals, but Dr. Alison Chapman’s database, The Victorian Poetry Network displays many scans of periodical poetry in their original contexts.  Please read and enjoy these wonderful “discovered” poems by Scottish women!
